25th Completed Project

The nearly completed Moggy Manor seen from my sewing table.

The old Waverly fabric my Daddy found seems to be in good shape. I remember the fabric but I don't remember if it was a couch or curtains. The fabric could be more than 40 years old.  It held up well in the washer on a gentle cycle.  I hand washed the cut sections before I started working on them.

First sewing project completed August 6, 2012

Made in the Learn to Sew class Aug 6th
at Hayes Sewing Machine Co.
Kwik Sew 3597

Holly told me about the Hayes store and their classes after she and her sister had purchased machines from them.  I signed up for the first Learn to Sew class on their schedule.  I had fun and was very pleased to take this home after the three hour class.  I really should have opened the pattern and read the instructions before arriving for the class but it turned out ok.  And I was hooked.

Inspiration

Bobby and Timmy in the sweater drying rack I dug out of my closet in the spring to free up space.  The cats slept in it all summer. I knew I could find a way to make a sturdier bed with PVC pipe.  That meant I had to learn how to use the sewing machine my sister gave me when I got laid off at the end of 2010.

Fleece
Viggo testing the new bed out.

The fleece was kinda fun to work with.  The best part is I didn't have to press the seams.  I probably didn't need to sew seams at all because fleece doesn't ravel. I'll experiment with that on the next one.  I used 3/4 of a yard and have as much left for another bed.  This bed is very tight but it was still pretty easy to get on the frame.  I'll try washing the other piece to see if it changes the fabric in any way.

The Prototype
Tested by Taffy

So the whole purpose of this sewing thing was to make PVC pet beds.  I'd seen them online constructed in various ways.  Mine needed to be washable. Cats vomit on everything.  If you have cute little, yappy dogs there's a good chance they will pee on it once in a while.  You have to be able to dismantle the PVC for cleaning.

Another bag

Barb's bag.
Completed September 4th

Since I'd made the large bag in the class I decided to make the small one at home while it was still reasonably fresh in my mind.  First I had to get my hand me down machine working.

The work station.

It took about half a day but I managed to get a free manual downloaded from Sears online.  I spent a couple days studying the manual and the machine.  It took me a couple more days to work up the nerve to oil it per the manual and Trish the Sewing Mentor.
